Fire Prevention Week 2016

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, students were greeted by some of their favorite community helpers Tuesday morning. Firetrucks, utility vehicles, equipment and gear, and procedures were explained as students talked to the members of Floyd County Volunteer Fire Department Station 3.

One firefighter was suited up, demonstrating how they appear during an emergency call.  When firefighters visit Check Elementary, they teach students not to be afraid of the suits, masks, and other gear worn by working firefighters.
First graders learned safety awareness tips and got an up-close look at the fire truck.

Check out this junior firefighter!

Mrs. Richardson was able to explain the shape of a fireman's helmet and the reason for wearing it facing forward.

Students were excited to discover what was inside the fire prevention loot bags!

Thank you, Station 3 for an exciting day!

Practice makes perfect!  Students continue to work on applying strategies during reading.
Our focus of past, present, and future took on new meaning as students worked to create a timeline of things that occurred earlier in first grade (in the past) and will be happening in the future.  We will be adding the at-home portion Monday.

Students practiced sight words with a tactile shaving cream activity on Thursday.

The shaving cream helped remove some of the markings and tape from student desks! Now they are clean for the next quarter of first grade!
